On 5 September 2026, Persona Theatre Company brings one of antiquity's most unrelenting tragedies to Nicosia audiences. Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes opens on a city under siege: seven enemy generals mass at seven gates, and at the heart of the crisis stand two brothers — Eteocles, defending the throne, and Polynices, who has returned at the head of the Argive army to claim it. The conflict is both political and intimate, a power struggle that collapses into fratricide and drags an entire city into its ruin.
What makes this production particularly compelling is the directorial lens through which Lea Maleni approaches the ancient text. Rather than staging it as a museum piece, Maleni uses the tragedy as a springboard for a contemporary meditation on war and the self-perpetuating logic of violence. Revenge generates new crime; destruction circles back to its origin within the family itself. The Theban chorus — ordinary citizens turning desperately to the gods — becomes a timeless image of civilian populations caught inside conflicts they did not choose.
The production invites audiences to sit with uncomfortable questions: what keeps cycles of violence turning, and who ultimately pays the price? These are not abstract philosophical puzzles but urgent, present-tense concerns, and Aeschylus, writing in the fifth century BC, understood them with startling clarity.
Tickets are priced between €5 and €10, placing serious theatre within easy reach. The performance takes place in Nicosia on 5 September 2026.
