Few settings in the Mediterranean can rival the Square of the Medieval Castle of Pafos when it is dressed for opera. On 4 and 5 September 2026, that transformation happens once again as the 24th Pafos Aphrodite Festival takes the stage, this time presenting Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore — a work that has enchanted audiences continuously since its 1832 premiere and remains among the most frequently performed operas anywhere in the world.
The opera's appeal lies in its rare emotional range: it is genuinely funny, genuinely romantic, and capable of catching you off guard with a moment of pure tenderness. The story follows Nemorino, a guileless young man hopelessly in love, whose pursuit of a magic elixir drives the plot with warmth and wit. The score's crowning jewel, the aria 'Una furtiva lagrima', is one of operatic history's most celebrated and instantly recognisable moments.
Performing this repertoire against the ancient stonework of a Cypriot castle, with the night air carrying the sound across the harbour, is an experience that goes well beyond a conventional concert hall evening. The festival has built its reputation over more than two decades precisely because the venue and the art form feel made for each other. Tickets are priced between €35 and €150, covering a range of seating options to suit different budgets and preferences.
